A Return

16mm, 6min, colour, sound; 2018

filmstill: A Return, 2018, 16mm, 6min, colour, sound

These masks, or Mattes, used during my first attempt at filming on 16mm,
attempt to convey a hidden layer, both the impossibilities of expression and
the contradiction of this construct.
Whether I am hiding or trying to reveal,
I am unsure.
These days seem ripe for the revealing of ones own masks,
of studying what layers have been left or employed willfully or not.
As narratives reveal more masks than truths,
I still try to search for what is simple.

The following stills offer a rough glimpse of a work in progress. Surfaces and reflections filmed in Portugal last year, mirrored cultivations, morphic oppositions and mirages in black and white.
