Gaby Berglund Cárdenas & Bev Hayes
Sweden/Ecuador / UKGaby Berglund Cárdenas (performer/director) & Bev Hayes (photographer/co-director) 2020
Hyphae
Photography, Triptych, 2020
Statement
Hyphae series is about the elemental uncertainty of time, space and being. We imagine a world where all types of humans and nature forge their duality into a oneness, thereby living in harmony or mutualism. The transformation that happens to the space in the forest during Cárdenas’ performance and experience of flow is a metaphor for transmutation and purification.

About the stills/triptych
These are behind the scenes stills while Cárdenas was undoing the installation “Hyphae” in a woodland forest in Sweden. A short video product of Cárdenas-Hayes collaboration is included in “Choreography In Time And Space”, a collective film produced by Timespecific and released in November 2020.
Back in July 2020, during the Covid19 Global Pandemic, Cárdenas and Hayes produced an installation performance. Cárdenas, who has been practicing meditation and tai chi for years, directed and performed a walking meditation and a sequence of movements amongst a gathering of trees.
*
Cárdenas’ multidisciplinary practice has been influenced by living in South Korea and the USA for the past 10 years and studying a Master’s in Fine Arts and Asian philosophies of non-dualism and oneness. Cárdenas moved back to Sweden in 2019.
Whether performing, making installations, objects, prints or artist’s books, the repetitive aspect of her process becomes a meditative ritual to explore the elemental uncertainty of time, space and being or social inequities with regard to gender, migrations or race. Thread, ink, fabric, and handmade paper are used in metaphorical ways. Cárdenas' work has been exhibited in international galleries and museums.

Beverley Hayes is a visual artist and an experienced photographer, who gained a BFA from U.W.E. (Bristol) Media and Studio Arts.
Hayes has brought to the project her acute interpersonal skills of capturing the performer in her creative process and natural environment, by fusing these ethereal elements of time, space and being in a combined digital visceral form.
