Instrumento de super-vivencia
pine wood/embroidery, 2020
This mask, titled Instrumento de super-vivencia, aims to pay tribute to a normally underused object—the face mask—which has become a survival tool for all of us due to the circumstances of COVID-19. By making a non-functional wooden mask I wanted to elevate and memorialize this now indispensable instrument of ¨supervivencia,¨ the Spanish word for survival, whose two component parts literally mean ¨super-experience.¨ The flower is a symbol of life, hope, and beauty in a world that seems to have temporarily lost the space for art, wherein we try to re-examine our lives, values, and experiences.
